We need to do more than hope.

 Stanley - Thursday

Two weeks ago I wrote about the obvious trauma felt by those who witnessed the death of George Floyd at the knee of Minneapolis policeman, Derek Chauvin. Even though they were bystanders, what they saw will stay with them forever. You can read that post here.

Who would have thought that tragedy was about to take place - of epic Greek proportions.  Ten days after I wrote the blog, in a Minneapolis suburb about 10 miles from the Chauvin courthouse, another Black man, 20-year-old Duante Wright, was shot and killed by police.

Duante and his son, Duante Jnr

Why is it a tragedy of epic proportions?

First and foremost, Duante Wright is dead.

Second, the timing couldn't have been worse - right in the middle of a trial for another police shooting. Protests immediately erupted, some violent. There were police-protestor confrontations, shops were boarded up, and curfews were imposed. The third set in a year: COVID curfews, Chauvin curfews, and now Wright curfews.

Rocks thrown in protest

Third, the location couldn't have been worse. It would have been bad enough for another Black man to be killed anywhere in the country, but for it to happen where the Chauvin trial was taking place.....

Fourth, the circumstances couldn't have been worse. It is awful when anyone is killed, but in this case, it seems that the shooting was accidental, that the policewoman pulled her handgun instead of her Taser. This whole episode is difficult to comprehend - how did someone with 26-years in the police, pull the wrong weapon?  What would Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides have created from this?

To be fair, as writing partner Michael is prone to say (why I don't know - who wants to be fair?), I would not want to be a policeman in the United States with so many guns and automatic weapons floating around. But I would like it even less to be a Black man, having to be perpetually nervous as to what may happen to you at any moment.

In the October 2020 Journal of Epidemiology and Public Health (click here), data showed that in the previous 5 years:

In the case of armed victims, Native Americans were killed by police at a rate three times that of white people (77 total killed). Black people were killed at 2.6 times the rate of white people (1,265 total killed); and Hispanics were killed at nearly 1.3 times the rate of white people (889 total killed). Among unarmed victims, Black people were killed at three times the rate (218 total killed), and Hispanics at 1.45 times the rate of white people (146 total killed).

I feel so sick about this whole affair that I don't want to write about it any more. To end, I list the Black people who were killed by police over the past ten years. (Click here for the source.) I'm sure that each had unique circumstances, and that in some cases police were justified in firing. What is so depressing is that so little changes. We need to do more than hope.

  1. Thank you for doing this. Unfortunately, many of these victims were killed in New York City or nearby. Several were young. Tamir Rice was 12 years old. Kimani Gray was 16. I didn't see Oscar Grant, but I may have missed it. He was shot on a BART station platform while laying face down. A movie was made about his killing: "Fruitdale Station." I can't bear to watch it. Elijah McClain was an introvert who played his violin to cats and dogs in rescue shelters. (This makes me cry every time I think of his picture doing this.) He did nothing wrong. He was apologizing to the cops while they were assaulting him.
And Daunte Wright was pulled over about air freshener hanging in his window? Stephon Clarke was shot in his grandmother's yard, and he lived in her house. Botham Jean was in his own apartment watching TV. On and on and on. It's unbearable, and white people of good conscience have to step up and protest. It's not fair for the Black community to have to do this constantly. There has to be mass opposition on this.

    1. Oscar's name is included in that stunning and dismaying list. I remember when I was in Oakland for a book-signing years back, I was on the BART and was jarred as I arrived at the Fruitvale Station stop. "So this is where it all went down," I thought. The station looked so different than it did on the movie, probably because the event took place at night and I was traveling during the day. But it made me incredibly sad.

  2. What an incredibly depressing list. We need Annamaria to find any optimism at all in this.

  3. This is horrifying! And depressing. Michael asks me for an optimistic read on it. And sad and disgusted as I am I find one. And that is this. That we are talking about it! Look back at the days they all died. The subject came up in a few instances, but not in in the overwhelming majority. We have the misery to be living through the age of awareness. The first step in solving any problem. We need to turn our anger and our disgust into action. Stan has made a contribution to that cause here today by shining a starkly bright light on the issue. I understand the emotional pain he endured to accomplish this. And I praise him for it. The days of police impunity must end. The more people who agree, the sooner it will come to pass.

  4. And Adam Toledo, age 13, was shot by Chicago police. The police body cameras were released, and showed him complying with the police arms to put his arms up. He did so. He was fatally shot. There are protests going on in Chicago with multiple communities involved. Need massive, systemic changes in policing.

  5. So tonight, April 19, there was justice for George Floyd. This was due to a brave young woman who taped his murder and then posted it and it was seen worldwide. And millions demonstrated. The facts were heard.
But this doesn't take away the pain of George Floyd's family, his daughter, his community nor does it stop the continuing police attacks on Black, Latinx, Indigenous and poor people and the disabled.
We shall see what happens about Daunte Wright's and 13-year-old Adam Toledo's killings.
