Last weekend at the Book Passage Mystery Writing Conference in Corte Madera Don Winslow threw out a challenge to everyone - Write what you are scared to write. He talked about going to a deeper level, picking that hardened scab and exploring the dark side inside you. Piled onto that David Corbett quoted Simone de Beauvoir who said "To show your true ability is always, in a sense, to surpass the limits of your ability, to go a little beyond them: to dare, to seek, to invent; it is at such a moment that new talents are revealed, discovered, and realized."

ReplyDeleteInteresting statement. I think that applies in a lot of fields-to stretch your boundaries, your limits. The pictures are lovely-as usual.

ReplyDeleteIf you don't work on tiptoe, you'll stay at the same level.
ReplyDeleteUntil I came to the "dark side inside you," I was thinking about comedy. I always think I could never write funny. Does it have to be the dark side that we are afraid to write?
