Wishing you peace and joy in this bright spanking new morning of 2019.
Making resolutions and breaking them isn't my thing. Every New Years I watch my favorite movie, The Third Man.
Postwar Vienna is a character, Graham Greene wrote the screenplay (onsite I've read when Sir Carol Reed flew him there and said start writing, we're filming a movie here. Now.)
Each time I watch it I discover something new.
One of the best, of so many lines, is the British captain telling Holly Martins, the scribbler of Westerns.
'Leave murder to the professionals.'
And of course he didn't.
Or this line, Calloway: That sounds like a cheap novelette.
Martins: I write cheap novelettes.
Or this dialogue between Harry Lime and Holly on the giant Ferris wheel that Orson Welles is supposed to have written; Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. You know what the fellow said – in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace – and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Holly.
Peace and Love - Cara on Tuesday
Cara, I love this, especially the comment about the Borgias and the Swiss. I just read it aloud to the my friend here. I wish I could watch the movie RIGHT NOW.
ReplyDeleteCara, I love this post, the movie, and of course you! Here's wishing you a wonderful New Year.
ReplyDeleteOh AmA maybe you can stream it? It's on Netflix - here - right now. Jeff here's to more Grecian intrigues!
ReplyDeleteNow, just a second, Cara. I'm half-Swiss (several generations removed...) and you're forgetting Swiss Cheese, the Swiss Army Knife, and the Swiss Family Robinson. Not quite so gloomy, now, is it? :-) Happy New Year!!!
ReplyDeleteSo right, EvKa but you forgot Swiss CHOCOLATE!
ReplyDeleteBonne Année!
