Libraries are so much more than a place for reading books. These days they assume roles abandoned by government services. They are where at risk children find a safe haven after school, where the out of work find computer access to opportunities, and where the lost feel part of a place where people care. BRAVO! By the way, Pratt did a great service with that endowment, because when Andrew Carnegie created the Carnegie Libraries, he left them with buildings, but no endowment. I guess his philosophy was, "If you build it, the money will come." Lived in Chicago, went to the library all of the time and wanted to be a librarian when I got older.
In Queens, my Dad took me to the library once a week and we'd leave with piles of books.
I am sad, alas, that my branch library has been culled of most books and that few are left. So one has to put books on reserve and wait for them to come from other branches. It takes weeks. Rarely can I find a book to read that's on the shelves.Kathy D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/18418720666849497808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1990338437877873686.post-73187267184114373542019-09-11T03:51:27.823-04:002019-09-11T03:51:27.823-04:00So wonderful to see this commitment and enthusiasm...So wonderful to see this commitment and enthusiasm! I think it balances Monday's piece. Sadly, libraries in Johannesburg - other than for historical collections - tend to be underfunded with variable interest from the staff. Anything unusual that you want has to be ordered from the central library and often never materialises. There are few author events or other outreach. I relied on Kindle.
There are many reasons for this. In the last century, libraries - like everything else - were focused on white people. Now, a focus on reading itself is the high priority. Hopefully, libraries will develop, but we need those generous donors... There are so many other priorities.Michael Sears (of Michael Stanley)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09886295534214542834noreply@blogger.com
