It sounded VAGUELY familiar, so I may have heard it once or twice before, but if I'd seen the word by itself, I probably would have figured it was some new kind of chewy candy. And yes, I did miss the "Hispanic Drug Lords" in my list of mediatypes, how could I forget them? Not to mention the "Hispanic Gangbangers." And the... no, please stop. Focus on the good. I was moved to write this by recent publications of writers whose work I admire and in one case would say I love. I think folks have tired somewhat of the Italian Mob, and the Russians have become the new go-to. But then, I think they're already wearing out the Russians, and a lot of writers seem to be switching to Islamic Extremists. And Politicians. Politicians are ALWAYS an easy go-to for bad guys. But is that last one stereotyping? Or just telling it like it is? (Sorry, couldn't resist that one.)

Stereotyping is bad writing, plain and simple. When it's your own personal ethnic background that's getting slammed over and over, it's even worse. Thankfully the Swiss-Germans don't get stereotyped too much... except for the evil bankers and Nazi collaborators and...

Oh well. I was going to address for fear of disillusionment, but I don't think I should go there. He made a lot of conquests. The Italian man as the great lover is a stereotype, but MUCH more benign than the what one typically sees in crime novels. I imagine that men like my "old friend" find that kind of type-casting very useful in their seductions.
But just imagine how you would have felt if your blog about your fund-raising success had been greeted with jeers about what a load of cheapskates the Scots are and disbelief that they opened their wallets for any reason except to let out the moths?Annamaria Alfierihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12311596277267789834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1990338437877873686.post-4235859525580193142014-08-11T07:34:26.982-04:002014-08-11T07:34:26.982-04:00I don't disagree that such persons exist and d...I don't disagree that such persons exist and don't seem to give a damn whose reputation they impugn in their facile exploitation of the myth. If an African American uses the N-word that does not make it okay for an Irish cop to do it too. Your bringing up the insensitivity (self-hatred?) of some Italian Americans comes across to me, in this context, as a suggestion that if it's okay for them it's okay for everybody. In 'Tears Of Angels' (2015) I have an Italian American character and he's lovely and handsome. An ex serviceman who got very, very friendly with the lassies round the naval base here. However--you knew that was coming--when looking for "culprits" on perpetuating the stereotype I think some well known Italian writers, film makers, and actors sit at the top of that pyramid.
