However, I write them in English. It's tricky as to how to let the reader know the characters are not actually speaking in English.

Assuming that someone speaks his own language well, that's how the English translation is: good English. But when native people speak in English, the text I write contains some common errors Ghanaians are prone to.

I wonder how other writers handle this dilemma.

Alice R. "Kwai" does exist in Ghana, although I haven't seen it that often. "Kwei" is a name of the Ga group, to which my father belonged. In writing about Greece my intention is to accurately convey what I see to non-Greeks. At times that means employing a manner of speech or conduct that is not what one would observe in Greece but is readily recognizable to those foreign readers. It is the emotion rather than the act I am seeking to convey.

Great piece.Jeffrey Sigerhttp://www.jeffreysiger.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1990338437877873686.post-23261597457368151282012-12-20T20:08:09.111-05:002012-12-20T20:08:09.111-05:00Kwei, three days ago a good friend of mine who liv...Kwei, three days ago a good friend of mine who lives in LA asked me if I knew your work. I didn't. But now here you are on my favorite blog. I too write about exotic places and appreciate your thoughts on how to do it. I am just starting in on my first book that takes in Africa. Months ago, I invented out of thin air a name for one of my main characters. It is Kwai! What do you think?Annamaria Alfierihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12311596277267789834noreply@blogger.com
